Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has acted – but this is no time for red tape. The Government’s $12.1 billion coronavirus business support package will be lapped up by small Southland businesses, but the year still shapes up as one of great uncertainty for the Southland economy, says Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand’s Southland local leadership committee chairman James Harvey.

Southland firms’ reactions to the Government’s Coronavirus business support package depended on size – it included a lot for the region’s small businesses with fewer than 20 staff, while larger firms have felt left out. The financial stress being experienced at the ‘big end of town’ remains, a real concern given the size of that sector. The support package is not a silver bullet.
