Selective laser melting (SLM) is a method of metal 3D printing that uses a laser to melt metal powder in layers, which stack up to become the printed part. The same process is known by a variety of names for patent reasons, most notably direct metal laser sintering (DMLS), but also more generally as laser-powder bed fusion and laser beam melting.

Although there are a variety of metal 3D printing technologies, SLM has established itself as the most commonly used. Examples of parts produced by SLM include orthotics, dental implants, automotive components, and jewelry.
