This took a lot of printing, reading G-code files in a text editor and (mostly unsuccessful) googling. On the way, I think I uncovered an error that a lot of people are making – although, to be fair, most folk have no need to know – who cares if Darth Vader prints 200mm high or 200.12mm high. Whereas, if focusing an optical system is at stake, 0.1mm is often too much .

The issue is within the first few hundred micrometres above the built surface, and is summed up as: ‘The G-code doesn’t know that you used a piece of paper to set the nozzle height’. Paper Most folk use a piece of paper to set adjust the starting gap between print head and nozzle tip, by homing (see note later) the altitude (‘z-axis height’) then adjusting the bed knobs until the paper can be slid back and forth […]
