The next time you hear Bartok’s famous “Violin Concerto No. 2,” it might be performed on a plastic instrument the musician fabricated at home on a 3-D printer.

Far-fetched? The reality is here. For about $10 in materials — not counting the strings, tuners, and bow — local electrical engineer and music lover Nick Samson was able to print a playable, and beautifully blue, violin.

He hasn’t been using his 3-D printer that long.
