The organisers of the purmundus challenge, the annual international 3D printing competition, have unveiled the names of this year’s finalists ahead of the Formnext trade show this month where winners will be announced.

Now in its seventh year, the theme is ‘beyond 3D printing’ and invited participants to submit innovative product design concepts that show the potential of additive technologies. The 38 finalists span 18 countries and forward-looking concepts across medicine, 4D printing, bionics, mobility, safety and packaging, fashion, jewellery, lifestyle and more.

There are also two new 3D printing technologies and a new material featured in the mix. Projects include Sandvik’s smash-proof 3D printed guitar, Diehl Aviation’s 3D printed curtain comfort header, and a clock which explores the use of sugar crystals as a constructive biomaterial.
